Make a skirt to fit you

Learn a new skill from Joanna Nahum; an experienced pattern cutter and a seamstress of bespoke garments.

What to expect:

You will learn how to make one pattern piece that will be cut out 6 times and when sewn together will fit your body. All you have to decide is: Do I want a pencil skirt with a slit for movement, or maybe an A line or flared affair? You could add pleats if you are feeling like more of a challenge. I can help you to create something that will suit your figure and style.

Course Dates:

Mondays 10-12.30 June 3rd, 10th, 17th and 24th

Fabric requirements:

You have a variety of options when it comes to choosing fabric for your skirt. It is always best if you like it and it suits your skin/hair tone. You will need 150cm of fabric for around knee length or 2 meters if you want it to be longer.

  • You could buy Calico and make a toile/prototype. This is easy to work with if you are new to sewing.
  • Or you could get a 100% cotton or linen, which is suitable for dyeing at a later date.
  • If you are used to working with different types of cloth- you could be a bit more adventurous. Please make sure it is woven and not knitted. No more than 5% stretch/ lycra/ elastane. I would steer clear of shiny, fine or delicate fabrics as these will be much harder to work with.

Please come in on a Monday to look at the huge selection that Lady sew and sew have. They can guide you towards a fabric that is suitable for this skirt project.

Trimming requirements:

Thread to match the main colour of your fabric. A little darker is always better than thread which is lighter than your cloth.40 cms of Velcro to close up your opening. No less than 2 cm width of tape or ribbon (it can be more aswell) which will become your waist finishing and a tie to close the top of the opening. The length needed depends on your waist measurement I’m a size 12 waist (78cm) and would need 150cm to make a good size bow.

Please bring your pattern cutting equipment with you: a sharp pencil, rubber, Prit stick type glue, plain or spot and cross paper.

Time:

10am - 12.30pm (Coffee and tea will be served from 9.30am onwards until the class commences.) Opportunity to look around the showroom and purchase fabric and supplies before and afterwards!
